Ortonville, MI

Ortonville is a village in north Oakland County, with 1,353 residents at the 2020 census. It sits inside Brandon Township and serves as the downtown commercial center for the township and part of neighboring Groveland Township. Amos Orton founded the village in 1848, and his grist mill helped draw people to the crossroads. The old town hall, the building that held the first post office and telephone exchange, and the mill all remain part of the village's built memory.

Mill Street gives the best local layout: older storefronts, village offices, restaurants, shops, and the downtown development authority's events and preservation work all gather around the historic center. The Brandon School District handles the public schools, linking the village to the surrounding township neighborhoods. Ortonville's role is unusually clear for a place this size. It is the small commercial heart for a broader rural-suburban area, with the mill, the downtown blocks, and the local calendar doing more to define it than any boundary line.
