Osborne, KS

Osborne is the county seat of Osborne County, Kansas, on the north side of the South Fork Solomon River at the junction of U.S. 24 and 281. The 2020 census counted 1,335 residents. Settlers from southeastern Pennsylvania founded Osborne City in 1871, and the town became the county’s administrative center as the surrounding hills and prairie filled with farms. The river valley and Smoky Hills give the city a distinctly north-central Kansas setting.

Osborne’s most unusual calling card sits outside town. A roadside marker and replica at the north end point toward the Geodetic Center of the United States, the 1901 surveying station at Meades Ranch about 18 miles southeast, where the North American Datum was established. In town, the Osborne County Historical Museum holds farm equipment, household objects, Indigenous artifacts, and a one-room schoolhouse built in 1912. Osborne USD 392 runs the local schools. County government, a river crossing, a museum, and a surveying landmark give this small Kansas city several ways to orient yourself on the map.
