About Osceola Mills

Osceola Mills grew in Clearfield County where coal, railroads, and Moshannon Creek met. The borough was laid out in 1857 and incorporated in 1864, just as the surrounding hills were filling with mines and rail work. The Tyrone & Clearfield Railroad’s Moshannon Branch joined the main line near town, giving Osceola Mills a rail yard and a way to move coal and supplies. Moshannon Creek forms the boundary between Clearfield and Centre counties, so the borough sits on a county line as well as a working waterway.

Pennsylvania Route 53 runs through town toward Philipsburg and Houtzdale, following the practical routes that tie the borough to nearby communities. The Columbia Volunteer Fire Company sponsors the annual week-long Fourth of July Carnival, one of those local traditions that turns a small borough into a regional date on the summer calendar. The coal operations and rail yard have receded, but the map still holds their shape: creek below, tracks and roads through town, hills rising around it, and volunteer institutions carrying the community forward.
