Osceola, NE

Osceola is Polk County’s seat, a Nebraska town that began when the families of James Query and Vinson Perry Davis arrived in October 1868. Davis named the settlement for Osceola, Iowa, whose name honored the Seminole leader. The county chose Osceola as its seat in 1871, and the town quickly added a frame courthouse, store, post office, and sod schoolhouse. Agriculture has remained the working base: dairy, cattle, pork, and grain move through the surrounding county, while the courthouse square keeps county business in the center.

Osceola Public Schools runs Jeffrey Elementary and the Osceola Middle/High School, and the Polk County Fair gives the town a recurring summer gathering. South of town, the Polk County Historical Society grounds bring together a museum, log cabin, country church, restored country school, and Union Pacific caboose. Those pieces make Osceola easy to use as both a county seat and a local history stop. The town’s story moves from sod walls and first courthouse work to modern school schedules and farm production, with the same square still holding the center.
