Oso, WA

Oso is a small Snohomish County CDP in the North Fork Stillaguamish valley, west of Darrington and along State Route 530. The community’s name replaced Allen to avoid confusion with Allyn in Mason County; in the valley, the river runs between Cascade foothills and the road links Arlington west with Darrington east. The river and highway are the two bearings most people use to place Oso.

March 22, 2014, changed how Oso is remembered. A landslide four miles east of the community crossed the North Fork Stillaguamish River, destroyed homes in Steelhead Haven, and caused a devastating loss of life. The permanent SR 530 Slide Memorial now honors those who died, the survivors, responders, and the surrounding communities. Today, the road, river, and memorial occupy the same narrow valley, so the history is part of the drive rather than a footnote. Oso’s local map is therefore both physical and human: river valley, Highway 530, Jim Creek Naval Radio Station nearby, and a place to stop and remember before continuing through the Cascades.
