Ossineke, MI

Ossineke is an Alpena County census-designated place in Sanborn Township, several miles south of Alpena along U.S. 23 and near Lake Huron. The 2020 census counted 932 residents. Sanborn Park Beach, Shin-ga-ba Shores playground, Little League fields, township hall, Devil River, and the Lake Street fishing platform give the community a local map that reaches beyond the highway. The shore, sports fields, and nearby Alpena services shape everyday life for a place that is officially unincorporated but has a recognizable center.

The name comes from an Anishinaabe place-name associated with image stones, and Sanborn Township history ties those stones to Chief Shin-ga-ba and the Devil River area. Ossineke was settled in 1844 by Jonathan Burtch and Anson Eldred; a sawmill followed, Lee Sanborn platted the town, and a Detroit and Mackinac Railroad station arrived in 1867 as the lumber era took hold. Today the community carries those layers through Shin-ga-ba Shores, Ossineke Road ball fields, Lake Huron beach days, fishing, and the U.S. 23 corridor. A Paul Bunyan and Babe statue near the school property adds a roadside landmark. Ossineke's life is a mix of township services, lake access, youth baseball, and old timber-country geography.
