Oswego, KS

Oswego is Labette County’s seat on the Neosho River, at U.S. 59 and U.S. 160 about 12 miles north of Oklahoma and 30 miles west of Missouri. The 2020 census counted 1,668 residents. The courthouse, USD 504 schools, city pool, walking trails, RV campground, and Labette County Fairgrounds make it a service center for the surrounding farm country. Labette Community College also holds classes at the high school, while larger regional hubs fill in for medical care, retail, and employment needs.

The city’s Riverside Park sits above the Neosho River valley and carries much of the town’s public life: playgrounds, shelter houses, ball fields, tennis courts, the 10,000-square-foot community center, and the fairgrounds all share that broader park complex. Oswego’s history runs deeper than the current grid, with Indigenous, trading-post, Civil War, and railroad chapters layered into the river setting. The result is a county-seat town that feels practical first—schools, court business, recreation, and farm trade in the same local circuit.
