Overton, NE

Overton is a Dawson County village with 607 people at the 2020 census, part of the Lexington micropolitan area. The Union Pacific Railroad gave the place its start, and settlers arrived in 1873. Five years later, African Canadian families from Elgin, Ontario, began moving nearby, filing homestead claims and starting farms. Many later moved to DeWitty in Cherry County, but their arrival belongs in Overton's first local chapter. The village covers 0.54 square miles, all land, so the railroad settlement remains a compact place on the Nebraska map.

Overton Public Schools keeps education in the village's local orbit. A later industrial chapter came from Plectron, which began manufacturing alert radios for fire departments in Overton in 1955 before moving operations to Lexington in the 1980s. Those two histories give the place an unusual range: a railroad beginning, a Black homesteading story, and a specialized local manufacturer. The local scoop is a Nebraska village whose past reaches from prairie claims to emergency equipment, with a school district still carrying the town's name.
