Owingsville, KY

Owingsville is Bath County's seat near the middle of Kentucky, at the junction of U.S. 60 and Kentucky 36. The county's early settlers were drawn to mineral licks and game, and the town's later story was tied to the same practical Kentucky mix of land, water, roads, and timber. Colonel Thomas Dye Owings arrived in 1795 to operate early iron furnaces, then accumulated land and wealth around the growing community that took his name.

The county courthouse role still makes Owingsville the place for public business, but the town has more texture than a seat on a map. Bath County Memorial Library sits on West Main Street, and the annual May Day Pageant gives local high school seniors a tradition that has run since 1954. Bath County's railroad and lumber era also left its mark; the county describes the late-19th-century timber trade and the last train through nearby Salt Lick in 1985. Owingsville is a small eastern Kentucky center with iron-furnace beginnings, a courthouse role, a library on Main Street, and a pageant that keeps the calendar local.
