Owyhee, NV

Owyhee is the main Nevada community on the Duck Valley Indian Reservation, which reaches across northern Nevada and southern Idaho along the Owyhee River. The Shoshone-Paiute Tribes formed a joint tribal government in 1936 after generations of Western Shoshone and Northern Paiute life in the valley; farming and ranching remain part of the story. Nevada State Route 225 is the road in and out, running south toward Elko and north across the Idaho line as Idaho 51. The town's geography is inseparable from the reservation.

Education and health care are concentrated in Owyhee. Owyhee Combined School serves kindergarten through twelfth grade, and a community education center offers GED and higher-education courses. The tribal government and Owyhee Community Health Facility give the reservation a set of services in town. The school and Duck Valley community use Mountain Time, a useful border detail as Nevada State Route 225 becomes Idaho 51. Owyhee is organized around the school, tribal programs, health care, and the reservation road.
