Oxford, AR

Oxford is a city in Izard County, Arkansas, near the Fulton County line, with a story that runs through mills, stores, schools, and churches. Early residents included blacksmith William Davis and the Garner brothers, who ran a sawmill and opened Oxford's first store. The Rowden Hotel followed around 1900, and the Bank of Oxford opened in 1919. Residents voted to incorporate Oxford as a second-class city in 1945; a year later long-distance telephone service arrived, and a stone schoolhouse replaced the old school in 1948.

School consolidation reshaped the town's everyday geography. Oxford's district joined Violet Hill in 1985, then became part of Izard County Consolidated; students now travel to schools in Violet Hill and Brockwell. The older mills, cotton gin, store, and hotel have closed, while a grocery, cafe, and churches remain. The Methodists and Presbyterians share a building again, echoing an arrangement from the Depression years.
