Oxford’s Courthouse Square remains both an everyday commercial center and the stage for the city’s largest annual gathering. Restaurants, shops, galleries, bars, and an independent bookstore ring the blocks around the courthouse; during the Double Decker Arts Festival, that year-round activity expands into two days of music, more than 100 art vendors, and over 20 local food vendors. Organizers expected the April 24–25, 2026 festival to draw more than 60,000 attendees. At other times, five zero-fare Oxford University Transit lines connect the Square with the University of Mississippi, shopping, theaters, and additional city destinations, while campus shuttles, weekend service, late-night routes, and paratransit broaden the system.

The university calendar gives the city rhythms that differ sharply between ordinary weekdays, home football weekends, academic breaks, and summer. Oxford’s public spaces also connect recreation with its literary and university identity. Rowan Oak, William Faulkner’s home for more than 40 years, occupies 29 wooded acres south of the Square. Its grounds are free and open from dawn to dusk, and the Bailey Woods Trail links them to the University of Mississippi Museum, whose galleries and public programs also have free admission. Oxford manages about 15 parks encompassing more than 300 acres. Pat Lamar Park alone covers more than 50 acres with walking paths, gardens, sculpture, and a lake; the Coach Howell Activity Center hosts basketball, pickleball, volleyball, gymnastics, walking, and other youth and adult programs, while mTrade Park supplies tournament fields for baseball, softball, and soccer.

Oxford’s 2025 estimate reached 26,773, compared with 25,416 people at the 2020 census. During 2020–2024, 43.2 percent of occupied homes were owner-occupied, median gross rent was $1,071, 57.5 percent of adults age 25 or older held at least a bachelor’s degree, and 25.4 percent of residents were in poverty. The large student presence is important context when reading those housing, education, and income measures.
