Oxford, NY

Oxford sits where the Chenango River splits the village, and its whole layout still makes sense as a transportation story. Benjamin Hovey and the first settlers arrived in 1791 near the Catskill–Ithaca turnpike and the north–south route between Utica and Binghamton. The Chenango Canal reached the village in the 1830s, turning Oxford into a port for bluestone and other goods before railroads took over. Today, 201 buildings and seven contributing structures make up the village’s historic district, so a walk through the center brings that layered history right up against everyday shops and homes.

The current Oxford loop runs through LaFayette Park, the Chenango River, and the Oxford Memorial Library’s Theodore Burr Covered Bridge collection. The library keeps the village’s bridge-building connection on display, while 6 On the Square gives the center a regular place for folk music and community events. In season, the farmers market and community band use the park, and the river remains a local fishing reference. Oxford feels like a Southern Tier village that grew from a canal port but never lost the habit of putting its community calendar within a few blocks.
