Oxford, WI

Oxford is a village in Marquette County, Wisconsin, on Wisconsin Highway 82 between Oxford Lake and Neenah Lake. The village lies within the Town of Oxford, a township officially established in 1852 when it was set off from Packwaukee. That town-and-village arrangement gives Oxford a split civic map: the incorporated village is a compact place, while the surrounding town carries the same name across a wider stretch of central Wisconsin. The Union Pacific Railroad runs through Oxford and crosses Neenah Lake to the northwest, keeping an old transportation line visible in the landscape.

Water shapes the view as much as the tracks. Oxford Lake sits near the village, Neenah Lake lies to the northwest, and Emrick Lake is another nearby landmark in the Marquette County lake country. The village was incorporated in 1912 and is part of the Westfield School District. Interstate 39 is roughly five miles east, but Highway 82 remains the local road through town. Oxford does not need a large footprint to be legible: two lakes, a railroad, a state highway, and the surrounding town all gather around the same name. It is a small Wisconsin village with a distinctly watery and rail-oriented map.
