Pahala, HI

Pahala is a Ka‘ū community on Hawai‘i Island, a former sugar-plantation village along Highway 11 between Na‘ālehu and Hilo. The 2020 census counted 1,403 residents. The old plantation pattern still shows up in the houses and in the way the place functions as a district center, while the surrounding economy now includes Ka‘ū coffee farms, macadamia orchards, cattle, and horse ranches. Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park rises inland to the northeast, and Punalu‘u’s black-sand coast is down the highway. For a small community, Pahala carries a useful set of everyday services: Ka‘ū High and Pāhala Elementary, the Pāhala Public and School Library, health care, a community center, and the local coffee network.

The Ka‘ū Coffee Festival remains the big annual gathering; the 2026 week ran June 14–20 and brought its Ho‘olaule‘a, music, hula, food, crafts, and coffee tasting to the Pāhala Community Center. The feel is not resort-town polish. It is a working upland community where plantation history, school and health services, coffee growing, and long drives along Route 11 all fit together.
