About Paint

Paint is a Somerset County borough with its story written in the valley of Big Paint Creek. The borough grew out of the old Paint Township community and held its first election on July 14, 1900; the township’s history also records farms, gristmills, and sawmills along Paint, Shade, and Stony creeks. The 2020 census counted 907 residents, and Paint sits in the Johnstown metropolitan area among Paint Township, Windber, and Scalp Level. Parts of Paint share the Windber Historic District, a National Register district shaped by the Berwind-White coal company’s 1897 town plan. That overlap gives the borough a strong connection to the mining-era town next door.

The best way to picture Paint is through those shared edges. Big Paint Creek runs through the valley, Windber’s historic grid reaches into Paint’s northeastern side, and the district includes homes and community buildings from the coal-town era. Paint Township’s older mill and farm history adds another layer, tying the borough to the wider Paint Creek Valley. The local map is a connected western Somerset landscape: Paint, Windber, Scalp Level, the creek, and the company-planned streets all belong to the same story.
