Painted Post, NY

Painted Post is a Steuben County village in the Town of Erwin, just west of Corning near the meeting of the Cohocton, Tioga, and Chemung river valleys. Its name comes from a post associated with Seneca history, and the village keeps the story visible with a replica post and Chief Montour statue in the square. A railroad depot arrived in 1873, and the Painted Post-Erwin Museum now holds local photographs and objects. New York 415 and Interstate 86 pass through the village, tying the old river-and-rail settlement to the Southern Tier road map. Painted Post is an upstate New York village with a specific crossroads, a museum, and a name whose history includes an ordinary bulletin post later painted by settlers.
