Palmyra, NE

Palmyra is an Otoe County village on gently rolling ground near Little Nemaha Creek, where the 2020 census counted 534 residents. Reverend John M. Taggart donated part of his farm for the town site, and Palmyra was platted in 1870. Its name recalls the ancient city in Asia Minor. The Midland Pacific Railway arrived alongside the old Nebraska City-to-Fort Kearny route, giving the new village a railroad, a post office, and a four-square-block park called Taggart Park.

Palmyra District OR-1 carries the school tradition forward, while Nebraska City and the wider Otoe County road network provide larger services. The town’s early school met in a log schoolhouse, and the first buildings followed quickly once the railroad was being built. Palmyra still has the feel of a place formed by a donated town site and a rail line: a small village in farm country, with creek bottoms nearby and the older overland route still present in the landscape. Taggart Park remains a reminder that the town site was planned from the beginning.
