The town got its start in the 1850s when contractor Edouard Paradis arrived to supply timber ties for the railroad cutting through the cypress swamps. Investors later laid out a planned village to welcome passengers traveling along the line, leaving behind enduring local landmarks like St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church and the historic Paradis theater building.
