Paragould sits along the crest of Crowley's Ridge, where green rolling hills rise unexpectedly out of the flat Delta farmland of Northeast Arkansas. The town gets its distinctive name from a nineteenth-century railroad rivalry between tycoons J. W. Paramore and Jay Gould, whose competing lines crossed paths here in 1882. That rail heritage still shapes downtown today, where brick storefronts and local dining spots line Pruett Street. Arts and culture thrive at the historic 1925 Collins Theatre, which draws regular crowds for plays and its popular Bluegrass Monday concert series. For daily recreation, residents take advantage of the expansive Paragould Community Center, walk the trails at Reynolds Park, or take a quick drive to nearby Crowley's Ridge State Park for swimming, camping, and hiking.
