Park River, ND

Park River is a Walsh County city that began as a Great Northern Railroad town site in 1884, named for the river beside it. The post office opened that fall, the village incorporated the same year, and Park River became a city in 1896. The old railroad logic still shows the town's shape: Briggs Avenue, Highway 12, grain handling, farm machinery, and houses gathered around a northern plains transport point. The Park River itself is not scenery at the edge of town; it is the reason the place has its name and the line around which local history keeps returning.

Today's city story has a few good touchstones. La Lier Park follows the river, the old CCC dam is part of local memory, and the city's history pages keep photographs of the walking bridge, Highway 12, harvests, school buildings, and the 1915 state football champions. Grain and sugar-beet country stretches beyond the streets, while the Walsh County seat at nearby Grafton handles the larger county map. Park River is a small North Dakota city with a railroad beginning, a river at its center, and a farm economy still visible in the roads and fields around it.
