About Parker
Parker is Turner County's seat, established in 1879 and incorporated as a city in 1883. The name came from the maiden name of a railroad official's wife, a small personal detail from the town's railroad beginning. South Dakota Highways 19 and 44 frame the city, with Parker sitting at the meeting point of county roads and the larger routes across southeastern South Dakota. Parker School District dates to 1889 and added a new elementary building in 2022, keeping education in the middle of the town's civic map. The Turner County courthouse gives the city its county-seat role, while the county fair brings 4-H projects and late-summer activity to the area. Parker is a small South Dakota city where courthouse, school, highway, and railroad history still fit into one local address.
