About Parkerfield
Parkerfield is a Cowley County city just east of Arkansas City, a small place that incorporated in 2004 after residents organized against a proposed annexation. Before incorporation, the area consisted largely of rural homes and agricultural land in Creswell Township, south of U.S. 166. The 2020 census counted 406 residents. Its location makes Parkerfield an eastern suburb of Arkansas City, even though the city retains the open, spread-out pattern of the countryside from which it grew.
Parkerfield is served by Arkansas City USD 470, and Arkansas City remains the nearby center for many services, shopping trips, and connections beyond Cowley County. The city government is a product of local decision-making: residents chose incorporation to keep control over the area's future, then built a municipal identity around that choice. Flat ground, drainage routes, scattered homes, and farm parcels still shape the view. Parkerfield is small enough for its boundary story to remain part of its character, with suburban ties on one side and rural Cowley County on the other.
