Parkton, NC

Parkton is a town in Robeson County, North Carolina, with its local map shaped by a railroad line, Green Street, and the surrounding Sandhills countryside. The settlement began around 1884 under the name Piney Forest. A one-room schoolhouse called Piney Forest Academy was renamed Parkton Institute in 1891, and the town incorporated in 1901. The railroad brought a depot and regular stops, helping Parkton become a point of movement between inland Robeson County communities. Before automobiles took over regional travel, ten daily trains stopped here. The depot once stood west of the tracks and has been preserved through the Parkton Historical Society's arrangement with the Atlantic Coast Line.

Education still gives the town one of its clearest reference points. Parkton Elementary School occupies 400 North Green Street and serves students from prekindergarten through eighth grade; the school traces its history to 1890 and remains part of the Robeson County school system. The old school names, the depot, and the railroad route connect present-day Parkton to the town that grew around transportation and instruction. Its location south of Fayetteville also places it within the wider regional network without making it a suburb in character. Parkton remains a compact North Carolina town where a preserved depot, an early school tradition, and a long railroad memory sit close together.
