Parsons, TN

Parsons is Decatur County's largest city, built where the Tennessee Midland Railroad laid out a town in 1889. The 2020 census counted 2,100 residents. Henry Myracle deeded 143 1/3 acres to the railroad, and the first train reached Parsons on June 30, 1889, linking the town to a line that ran from Memphis to the Tennessee River at Perryville. The original street plan still gives Parsons a crisp center: broad east-west streets, numbered blocks, and US 412 and US 641 crossing through town.

Parsons began with rail freight and local stores, then grew into a regional service town for Decatur County. Main Street and the numbered streets hold the municipal and commercial core, while roads lead toward the Tennessee River and Perryville to the east. The Tennessee River Trail places the city in a wider route through river towns, and local history keeps the Pea Vine railroad story close at hand. Parsons is easiest to read from the tracks outward: the grid, the roads, and the river connection all started with a train that arrived in 1889.
