Passapatanzy, VA

Passapatanzy is an unincorporated CDP in western King George County along Virginia Route 218. The route runs about nine miles west to Fredericksburg and about 15 miles east to US 301 at Dahlgren; the county seat is 10 miles southeast. The 2020 census counted 1,244 residents. The name preserves Patawomeck history: Japasaw, a lesser chief of the Patawomeck, was known as Chief Passapatanzy because he made his home there. Present-day Passapatanzy is a highway-and-creek community within a county that reaches toward the Potomac and Rappahannock Rivers.

The state-recognized Patawomeck Tribe traces its historic village to the area and continues to maintain community ties nearby. State Route 218 provides the everyday geographic link to Fredericksburg, King George, and US 301, while Passapatanzy Creek and the surrounding county roads preserve the name on the map. The route and creek keep the community tied to a wider Fredericksburg-area landscape. The place's distinction comes from the continuity between an Indigenous place-name, a living tribal history, and a current unincorporated settlement in the Fredericksburg region.
