Patrick AFB, FL

Patrick AFB is a Brevard County census-designated place on Florida’s Space Coast, set on a barrier island between Cocoa Beach and Satellite Beach. The Atlantic is on one side, the Banana River on the other, and State Road A1A ties the installation to the beachside communities around it. The place began in 1940 as Banana River Naval Air Station, where Navy seaplanes ran antisubmarine patrols during World War II. After deactivation, it moved to the Air Force in 1948, became a missile-range headquarters, and took the Patrick name in 1950 for Major General Mason Patrick. In 2020 it was renamed Patrick Space Force Base, but the old AFB name still shows up in the place list and local directions.

Today, Patrick is the home base for Space Launch Delta 45, which runs launch operations, range safety, tracking, weather, and communications for Cape Canaveral Space Force Station and the Eastern Range. The range stretches far out over the Atlantic, so the local rhythm is part beach town, part flight-line and countdown clock. Launch support, military families, contractors, rescue crews, and coastal habitat all share the narrow strip of land. Cocoa Beach and Satellite Beach are the everyday neighbors; Cape Canaveral is the big operational partner just up the coast.
