Paukaa, HI

Paukaa is a small census-designated place on Hawai'i Island just north of Hilo, between Wainaku and Papaikou. County planning treats Paukaa, Wainaku, and Kaiwiki as a connected Hilo-edge area: mostly residential, without a separate commercial core, and close enough to Hilo that everyday errands and services run through the larger city. The local roads tell the story better than a town center would. Paukaa Drive, Kuikahi Street, Kahoa Street, and Kulana Street serve the inland and ocean sides, with narrow rural-village roads. Paukaa Park is on Kulana Street, and the place name appears in Hawai'i's historical record, including an 1866 census organized around the Hilo-Paukaa area. In practice, Paukaa is a residential coastal neighborhood with its own roads, park, and name, folded into Hilo's orbit.
