Pawnee, IL

Pawnee is a Sangamon County village of 2,678 residents in the 2020 census, about 14 miles south of Springfield and roughly three miles from I-55. The name honors the Pawnee people, while the town's later history was tied to coal, rail, and the surrounding farm country. The Victor Mine explosion of October 13, 1902, killed six workers. Peabody operations continued the area's mining story for decades, with the large Mine No. 10 east of town closing in 1994. Pawnee's square, library, schools, and parks are the clearest places to get oriented today.

The Pawnee Public Library moved into a larger building on the north side of the square in 2003, and the current high school building, dedicated in 1960, occupies the site of two earlier schools destroyed by fire. Pawnee Unit School District 11 and the library give the village a civic center, while Springfield supplies the nearby metropolitan connection. The local scoop is a small capital-area village whose streets still carry coal and railroad history beneath a school-and-library present.
