Sitting right where the Payette and Snake rivers meet along the Idaho-Oregon border, Payette is a peaceful small town of around 8,000 residents. It got its start in the 1880s as a railroad construction camp nicknamed Boomerang before renaming in honor of French-Canadian fur trapper François Payette. Today, the waterways and historic streets give the town a relaxed, neighborly charm with easy access to fishing, boating, and scenic riverfront parks.

The surrounding valley is filled with farmland and long-standing fruit orchards, celebrated every spring during the annual Apple Blossom Festival. Families have close-knit local schools right in town, while larger shopping centers, healthcare, and dining in Ontario, Oregon, are just across the river. For anyone considering a move to western Idaho, Payette provides an affordable, down-to-earth setting with plenty of room to breathe.
