Payson, IL

Payson is an Adams County village with an 1835 founding date and a setting shaped by farmland, church life, and the roads leading toward Quincy. Its town grid belongs to the early settlement era, but Payson is best understood through the way old stories keep resurfacing in ordinary places. During the 1860 presidential campaign, residents raised a pole carrying Stephen Douglas banners and an effigy of Abraham Lincoln riding a rail — a pointed bit of local political theater that still gives the village a memorable place in the county's story.
