A school dedicated in 1901 and used through 1988 now serves as Payson's museum, community center, and event space. The city-owned Peteetneet building contains local-history displays and an art gallery, gives public tours Tuesday through Saturday, and rents an auditorium, amphitheater, and meeting rooms. The 2026 Golden Onion Days schedule identifies the celebration as its 97th year, with events from September 4-7 and a Labor Day parade. Payson City Library opens until 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday and provides Libby e-books and audiobooks plus more than 1,000 Creativebug video classes. City recreation spans neighborhood parks, larger complexes, adult and youth sports, the seasonal municipal pool, and the Forebay Recreation Area, for which the city maintains regular and winter trail maps.

Under Utah Transit Authority schedules effective in April 2026, Route 805 connects Payson with Santaquin, Spanish Fork, Provo Central Station, and Utah Valley University; Route 821 also reaches Provo Central, and limited Route 822 serves Brigham Young University and Utah Valley University. Payson grew from 21,101 residents in the 2020 census to an estimated 24,630 in 2025, an increase of 16.5 percent from the 2020 population base. Children accounted for 30.7 percent of residents during 2020-2024, and average household size was 3.35. In the same period, the Hispanic or Latino share was 17.9 percent, while 15.2 percent of people age five or older spoke a language other than English at home.

Median household income was $89,905, and workers' mean travel time was 23.1 minutes. The repurposed school preserves a long-used civic building, while the library, recreation system, annual celebration, and bus network give a growing population several different ways to participate locally or reach the Provo area.
