Pecatonica, IL

Pecatonica takes its name from the river along its northern edge: peeketolika, a Native American word for crooked river. Settlers arrived in 1835, the village was laid out under the name Pecktonick, and Pecatonica incorporated in 1869. The village sits about 10 miles west of Rockford, with the river, the old railroad bed, and Main Street creating its basic orientation. That combination gives Pecatonica a working history tied to transport and a present geography that still faces the water.

Much of the current local routine gathers around the river corridor. The Pecatonica Prairie Trail follows the former rail bed for 29.5 miles between Rockford and Freeport, and Sumner Park combines ball fields, tennis courts, playgrounds, fishing access, and a connection to the 1,047-acre Pecatonica Wetlands Forest Preserve across the river. The Winnebago County Fairgrounds and Pecatonica Community Unit School District 321 add regional institutions at the village edge. Pecatonica is a Rockford-area village whose fairgrounds, school, trail, and river all point back to the same crooked-water name.
