Pelham, TN

Pelham lies in a farming valley at the foot of Tennessee's Cumberland Plateau, in Grundy County north of Monteagle. Its post office opened on April 4, 1832, giving the community an unusually early date in the local record. Pelham first belonged to Franklin County, then Coffee County, and finally Grundy County when that county formed in 1844. The changes in county lines matter because Pelham has long served as a small crossroads between mountain communities, farms, and the roads over the plateau.

Today the post office, Pelham Elementary School, fire and rescue service, utilities, and nearby farms make up the practical center of town life. Music adds an unexpected second identity: The Caverns, an underground performance venue in the surrounding valley, brings touring acts and filmed programs to the area, while the Gilliam family daffodil field draws people in spring. Pelham is still a place of fields, churches, and local roads, but the caves and seasonal flowers give its rural setting a wider audience. The result feels grounded in Grundy County and open to visitors at the same time.
