Pembina, ND

Pembina sits at the meeting of the Pembina and Red rivers in the far northeastern corner of North Dakota, about three miles south of Canada and across the Red River from St. Vincent, Minnesota. Interstate 29 runs west of town toward the border crossing at Emerson, Manitoba, and south toward Grand Forks and Fargo. The city’s location makes the border, the rivers, and the flat Red River Valley part of everyday geography, not distant map features.

Pembina’s recorded history reaches into French Canadian and Red River trade, with European traders and Native communities meeting here long before modern state lines. The place name refers to high-bush cranberries, and North Dakota’s first post office was established here in 1851. Winter, flood seasons, and border traffic all show up in local routines. The Pembina State Museum carries that regional story, including the river trade, early settlements, and the glacial Lake Agassiz landscape beneath today’s rich farm soil.
