Peninsula, OH

Peninsula sits in the bend of the Cuyahoga River, inside Cuyahoga Valley National Park, and the name fits the land. Hermon Bronson settled here in 1824, then the Ohio & Erie Canal opened in 1827 and turned the village into a shipping center. Canal boats, mills, warehouses, quarries, hotels, and saloons gave the place a working river-town center. The Valley Railway arrived in 1880 and carried stone and farm goods toward Akron and Cleveland. When cars replaced canal and rail traffic, local residents began preserving the old buildings. Today Peninsula reads as a small historic center wrapped by the park, with the towpath, river, and depot holding the same valley story together.
