Pepeekeo, HI

Pepeekeo is a Hawaii County CDP on the windward side of Hawaii Island, along Route 19 between Onomea and Honomu. The town sits on the Hamakua Coast above ocean cliffs, with steep gulches, wet green slopes, and old plantation roads shaping the local map. Hilo is about 15 miles south, keeping Pepeekeo tied to the island's east-side jobs and services.

The place grew around sugar. Metcalf Plantation began at Kaupakuea in 1857, the first crop was harvested in 1859, and the operation became Pepeekeo Sugar Company in 1874. Cane moved through fields, rail lines, and long flumes to the mill, while company housing and stores formed a working settlement. Pepeekeo later absorbed Honomu and Hakalau operations, joined a 1971 processing cooperative, and became part of Mauna Kea Sugar in 1973. Today Route 19, small homes, tropical farms, ocean overlooks, and the old plantation landscape carry that history forward. Pepeekeo has a lush setting, but its strongest local thread is the way roads, gulches, and working land still point back to the mill era.
