Perth Amboy, NJ

Sitting right where the Raritan River opens into Raritan Bay, Perth Amboy combines coastal scenery with a dense, walkable layout. Known as the "City by the Bay," it offers open water views that you can easily enjoy while strolling along Sadowski Parkway or relaxing near the waterfront marina. Heading inland, the residential streets lead straight into Smith Street, the bustling downtown corridor filled with local shops, neighborhood bakeries, and authentic Latin American eateries. Its unique name blends the Lenape word *Ompoge* with the name of the Scottish settlement established here in the late seventeenth century. During the colonial era, Perth Amboy served as the capital of East Jersey, and the 1764 Proprietary House still stands near the waterfront as the only surviving royal governor's mansion in the original colonies. The community also holds a proud place in civil rights history as the home of Thomas Mundy Peterson, who became the first African American to vote under the Fifteenth Amendment in 1870.

Perth Amboy's historic downtown station sits on the North Jersey Coast Line, providing train service into Newark, New York Penn Station, and the Jersey Shore.
