Peters, CA

Peters is a San Joaquin County census-designated place 12 miles east of Stockton, centered on Fine and Copperopolis Roads. The 2020 census counted 708 residents, and the area sits at about 112 feet in elevation. Peters was surveyed in 1871 and became one of five stops on the Stockton and Copperopolis Railroad. By 1880 it had a grain dealer, hotel, store, telegraph office, church, and school, making it a supply and shipping center for surrounding farms. That commercial role faded: the post office and most businesses had closed by 1951.

Today, San Joaquin County describes Peters as a rural residential community with small lots and an agricultural character. The community boundary covers about 975 acres, much larger than the original crossroads suggests. Fine and Copperopolis Roads still provide the clearest orientation, and nearby Stockton supplies the larger regional setting. Peters is a place where the railroad-era crossroads survive mainly as a map of what disappeared, while homes and farmland define the present landscape.
