Petersburg is a census-designated place and the borough seat of Petersburg Borough, Alaska, situated on Mitkof Island. The town serves as the headquarters of the Petersburg Indian Association, a federally recognized Tlingit tribe. Historically, Tlingits utilized the area as a summer fish camp, and the town eventually developed a thriving commercial fishing industry. Today small cruise ships and yachts visit during the summer months, and local public education is provided by the Petersburg School District.
