Petersham, MA

Petersham is a Worcester County town where the old village center and a large conservation landscape sit side by side. European settlement began in the 1730s and Petersham incorporated in 1754; the Common Historic District, established in 1967, runs along North and South Main Streets and includes more than forty structures from the mid-1700s to the mid-1900s. Petersham Memorial Library and the common keep the civic center legible, while the old one-room schoolhouses remain part of the town's preservation work.

Outside the center, Harvard Forest occupies nearly 4,000 acres in Petersham, with research, education, the Fisher Museum, and 32 miles of public hiking trails. Harvard Forest recognizes the land as ancestral Nipmuc homeland. Quabbin Reservation, Swift River lands, Petersham State Forest, and other protected tracts extend that forested setting. The town's elementary school, library, historic commissions, farms, and conservation groups share the same small-road network. Petersham's character comes from that overlap: a New England common with active civic care, surrounded by working and protected woods that attract researchers, hikers, and residents.
