Pettus, TX

Pettus is a Bee County census-designated place at the junction of U.S. 181 and Farm Road 623, about 14 miles north of Beeville. The 2020 census counted 449 residents. The community grew in the ranching country around John Freeman Pettus, whose large operation gave the settlement its name, and the arrival of the San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railroad in 1886 helped turn the crossroads into a town. Today U.S. 181 runs through the center, linking Pettus with Beeville to the south and Kenedy to the north.

School life gives Pettus its clearest gathering point. Pettus Independent School District serves local students, and the secondary school teams compete as the Eagles. The surrounding landscape is South Texas ranch and farm country, with the highway carrying the daily traffic that once depended on the railroad. Pettus remains small, yet its map holds several layers at once: a family name, an old rail arrival, a county road junction, and a school district that keeps the community connected to the wider Bee County area.
