Fresh produce gives Pharr an unusually direct place in the national food-supply chain. The city-owned Pharr International Bridge is Hidalgo County's only full-service commercial border crossing, carrying passenger vehicles as well as freight between Pharr and Reynosa. City figures released for the 2025 produce season said the crossing handled more than 65 percent of U.S. fresh-produce imports from Mexico and supported over $47 billion in annual trade. A July 2026 city update counted 220,000 produce trucks in 2025, including 34,000 avocado loads. Pharr turns that working identity into public events during Fresh on the Border Week, which pairs an industry forum and produce-season ceremony with a downtown Avocado Festival featuring local vendors, food, activities, and live music. In the 2020-2024 profile, 95 percent of residents identified as Hispanic or Latino, 83 percent of people age five or older spoke a language other than English at home, and nearly one-third of residents were under 18.

Homeowners occupied 59 percent of homes; the median owner-occupied value was $121,900, median monthly costs with a mortgage were $1,403, and median gross rent was $1,037. Median household income was $52,814. City recreation provides both heat-season and year-round options. The Aquatic Center combines an indoor-outdoor natatorium used for lap swimming, water polo, splash ball, and aqua aerobics with a summer water park. The eight-acre Pharr/Vanguard Academy Nature and Birding Center adds a walking trail, amphitheater, pavilion, and interpretive signs, while several neighborhood parks provide public Wi-Fi, courts, playgrounds, and walking loops.
