Phoenix, IL

Phoenix is a Cook County village about 19 miles south of the Chicago Loop, tucked between Harvey and South Holland. The 2020 census counted 1,708 residents. The village’s streets sit in the industrial south-suburban belt, with Halsted Street and the Illinois Central Railroad corridor connecting local blocks to Harvey, Chicago, and the wider region. Phoenix is small on the map but sits inside a dense network of rail, factories, municipal services, and older working-class neighborhoods.

Phoenix grew out of the planned industrial suburb of Harvey, but it incorporated separately in 1900 after residents wanted to stay outside Harvey’s temperance rules. The village expanded with steel-mill jobs and Black migration from the South and Chicago’s South Side, then lost a large share of its land and tax base when its southern section was deannexed to Harvey in 1960. Today the local story is one of persistence: a compact village maintaining its own government beside larger neighbors, with Harvey’s industrial history and Chicago’s labor market still shaping the everyday map.
