Pierce, NE

Pierce is a city and county seat in northeast Nebraska, named with Pierce County for President Franklin Pierce. The city was platted in 1871, and a courthouse went up the same year; the 2020 Census counted 1,845 residents. Its setting is the northeast Nebraska mix of open farmland, county government, and small-town streets. The odd local headline came in 2013, when the Lambrecht Chevrolet collection—nearly 500 classic cars kept by a longtime dealer—drew collectors from far beyond Nebraska for a no-reserve auction.

Willow Creek State Recreation Area sits about a mile and a half southwest of town, tying Pierce to a 700-acre flood-control reservoir and 1,633 acres of parkland. There is camping, boating, fishing, an eight-mile limestone hike-and-bike trail, and a connector into Pierce. The park is close enough to make water and trail time part of the town's routine. The town's shape is easy to read: courthouse and county records at the center, a memorable car story in its rearview mirror, and a lake-and-trails outing just beyond the last blocks.
