Pierceton, IN

Pierceton is a Kosciusko County town in Washington Township, laid out in 1853 by John Butler Chapman and Lewis Keith and named for President Franklin Pierce. The post office dates from that same year. U.S. 30 and State Road 13 meet at the town, so the old Main Street grid carries local errands and through traffic across north-central Indiana. The Pierceton Historic District, listed on the National Register in 1992, keeps the nineteenth-century town plan part of the present-day streetscape.

Pierceton’s school history is especially woven into civic memory. The current Pierceton Elementary opened in 2015 on the site of 1870 and 1923 school buildings, and the Pierceton Heritage Association connects alumni with residents around that legacy. Since at least 1893, school alumni have held a banquet honoring an older graduating class. The town also has the Pierceton and Washington Township Public Library, town offices, utilities, and monthly council meetings. Pierceton feels like a crossroads town whose school, post office, library, and highways still belong to the same local story.
