About Pierre

Pierre is the capital city of South Dakota and the county seat of Hughes County, situated along the rough bluffs of the Missouri River. Founded in 1880 and chosen as the state capital upon statehood in 1889, the community of approximately 13,900 is the second-least populous state capital in the country. The city lies across the river from historic Fort Pierre and is located just a few miles from Lake Oahe, a major regional recreation area.
