Pine Ridge, SC (CDP)

Pine Ridge is a Lexington County town with 2,167 people at the 2020 census, part of the Columbia metropolitan area. It was incorporated in 1958, when landowners drew a one-mile boundary around the area near Pine Ridge Drive and Fish Hatchery Road to avoid annexation by Cayce. The town's map still carries an older military imprint. Camp Moore, also called Camp Styx, operated nearby as a National Guard training camp from 1913 into the 1920s; troops were mobilized from the site for the Mexican border in 1916 and for World War I in 1917.

The former camp site developed several later uses. The Pine Ridge National Guard Armory occupies part of the land, and the Cohen Campbell Fish Hatchery was built there in 1935 through a Works Progress Administration and Civilian Conservation Corps project. The hatchery was renamed in 1985 for a longtime manager. Pine Ridge also has the South Congaree–Pine Ridge Branch of the Lexington County Public Library, whose dedicated building opened in 2007. The local thread is a municipality formed around a boundary question, with a training camp, fish hatchery, armory, and library marking different chapters of the same Lexington County crossroads.
