Pinecraft, FL

Pinecraft is a Sarasota County community with a seasonal rhythm unlike most places in the tracker. The area began as the Sarasota National Tourist Camp, and the name Pinecraft took hold in 1925–26 as the camp developed around a grid of small lots, a community house, a water tank, and a park beside Phillippi Creek. Amish and Mennonite visitors soon became part of the story, first through farming experiments and later through the winter migration that made Pinecraft one of North America’s best-known plain Anabaptist destinations. The 2020 census counted 486 residents, but the winter population swells far beyond that.

Today Pinecraft’s center of gravity is Pinecraft Park and the nearby streets around Bahia Vista and Beneva. Visitors arrive by bus from Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and other northern communities; many move around on foot or bicycles, while the restaurants, shops, churches, and park gather people from both the local year-round community and the winter crowd. Sarasota County Schools serves the area. Pinecraft works on two clocks at once: a small residential neighborhood through the summer, and a full seasonal community when Amish and Mennonite families come south for sun, fellowship, food, and a break from northern winters.
