Pinehurst, NC

Pinehurst was founded in 1895 by Boston soda fountain magnate James Walker Tufts, who envisioned a restorative retreat tucked into the North Carolina Sandhills. He hired landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted to design the layout, creating a timeless New England style village defined by curving streets, open green spaces, and shaded brick walkways. Legendary course architect Donald Ross arrived shortly after, turning the area into a cornerstone of American golf. Today, the village center remains as charming as ever, with historic cottages housing locally owned bakeries, cozy pubs, and boutique shops around the Village Green.

Golf is woven into daily life across the community. Pinehurst Resort and its famous No. 2 course anchor the area, but dozens of surrounding clubs offer plenty of variety for players of all skill levels. The United States Golf Association recently expanded here with Golf House Pinehurst and the World Golf Hall of Fame, cementing the village as a true golf capital. That brings world-class dining, well-kept amenities, and an energetic calendar of major championships, all while the town retains a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

The community has also expanded well beyond the historic core. Pinehurst continues to attract retirees alongside an influx of younger families and remote workers looking for a slower pace and great schools. Housing options range from historic properties in the old village to peaceful waterfront homes on Lake Pinehurst and modern subdivisions built along the fairways. When you are house hunting, keep in mind that neighborhoods have different rules, from strict historic preservation guidelines in the center of town to private communities with specific HOA and club membership requirements.

Equestrian traditions provide another beloved dimension to local culture. The historic Pinehurst Harness Track has welcomed standardbred racehorses for winter training since 1915, and residents often stop by in the mornings to watch the trotters work out. Nearby, the Fair Barn hosts regular weekend events, concerts, and farmers markets. Between the miles of pine-scented walking paths, top-rated healthcare at Moore Regional Hospital, and strong community roots, Pinehurst offers an easy, welcoming rhythm for everyday living.
